THE CASA FORTE
Among the must-sees in the Formazza Valley, the Casa Forte di Ponte is a must-see for those who love history, architecture, and Alpine culture. Located just north of the center of Ponte Formazza, in a small cluster of buildings separated by the main road, the Casa Forte stands out for its imposing stone architecture, distinct from the typical Walser style.
Built in 1569 by the wealthy notary and owner Antonio Zur Schmitten, the Casa Forte—also known as Schtei Hüs ("stone house") or "der Turä" ("the prison")—is today an ethnographic museum that recounts the life, crafts, and history of the valley. A place where the past comes to life through authentic objects, historical documents, and thematic exhibitions.

A dive into the history of the valley
Inside the Casa Forte are:
-
A historic warehouse where goods such as salt, wine, and grain were stored for trade with Switzerland.
-
An ancient prison with a barred window, where thieves were locked up and blasphemers were publicly punished.
-
A period kitchen with a fireplace and stone sink.
-
The heated living room, where the local assembly met.
-
A Walser bedroom complete with period furnishings and clothing.
-
An exhibition room dedicated to artistic installations and reconstructions of religious buildings.
Today, the Casa Forte houses a rich collection of traditional objects from Walser culture and rural life: harnesses, tools for processing milk, wool, and hemp, everyday utensils, and much more. Every year, photographic and documentary exhibitions are held to showcase the centuries-old history of the Formazza Valley.
